Case Study
Modernising the desktop environment for a global company
Background
Our client needed to modernise and unify their desktop environment across a global estate of 120,000 Windows and Mac devices. They had previously attempted a modernisation programme with no success which meant there was the added hurdle of scepticism among key stakeholders.
There were multiple legacy management platforms in use with varying device configurations and inconsistent endpoint security. There was also a significant operational overhead. Unfortunately, a “big bang” migration was deemed too risky, given the scale and complexity of the environment.
What we did
To reduce risk and ensure continuous business operations, we adopted a phased deployment strategy. We enabled the dual running of legacy and new platforms during the transition. This was more complex than migrating everyone at once, but better for the business and its users.
Our first job was to establish a dedicated delivery team that brought together internal stakeholders, global support teams and key third-party partners. This team was responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the new desktop solution.
Critical to the success of this programme was re-engaging the stakeholders who had lost faith after a previous failure. We achieved his with a comprehensive communications programme which enabled us to regain their confidence.
Technology in scope
We were developing a fully modernised desktop stack with an up-to-date Operating System for both Windows and Mac devices.
This included antivirus tooling, application repackaging and processes. Training to ensure the adoption of the changes was vital to the programme’s success and this was deployed across a wide global audience.
Results
We delivered the programme ahead of time and within the client’s budget. As a result of this programme, users now have a standardised experience globally. It is easier for the technology team to manage due to the enhanced device visibility, and the business is now better protected from cyber-attacks due to stronger endpoint security controls. The processes we implemented are all scalable so future platform updates will be easier to achieve.
