Executing End User Support & Transition for an Energy Supermajor
A transition during turbulent times
In 2020, as part of an oil major's business divestment, prosource.it was contracted to transition the end user computing environment and its supporting infrastructure to the buyer.
Overview
In 2020 the Prosource.it team successfully transitioned the End User Computing infrastructure in a challenging physical location as part of a business divestment. The transition consisted of the IT environment that supported 900 office-based users, plus 3500 users supporting a large oil field in active production.
The prosource.it team was brought in to ensure an asset inventory was completed, manage the End User Computing relationship with the buyer and implement a detailed plan to ensure a secure transition of IT systems and operations. This allowed the buyer to ultimately be successful in establishing their systems and infrastructure and in limiting the impact to the ongoing business operations of the oilfield.
Challenges
Safety and security are a priority in any project prosource.it delivers. Covid-19 introduced a unique challenge which the prosource.it team had to overcome. The team was able to complete the divestment activity without any Covid-19 infections – despite interacting with thousands of users and a team which peaked at more than 40 technicians.
The team developed safety protocols for both the large team working on the divestment and the end users that needed to return computers for data wiping and handing over. The team created a drive through drop-off centre in the office car park that managed 900 users per site in a 3-day period.
This took logistical planning to ensure vehicles can move through the area safely and without disruption to the surrounding area. Tents were set up, safety equipment flown in, safety procedures and daily health logs all ensured that the people involved were safe.
After 6 months of planning, the prosource.it team executed a plan over a 1-week period that collected and wiped 3000 computers to protect intellectual property and wipe 400 virtual and physical servers.
Execution & Results
After 6 months of planning, the prosource.it team executed a plan over a 1-week period that collected and wiped 3000 computers to protect intellectual property and wipe 400 virtual and physical servers. The team assisted in the redaction and back up of hundreds of terabytes of data that was transferred to the buyer along with all the other IT assets.
The plan ensured that the buyer received the assets in a timely fashion; allowing it to quickly re-establish their IT environment to ensure no impact to the operation of the business. The key to the successful transition was a solid plan that ensured a smooth transition that met the requirements of both parties.
Summary
At the end of transition, all the IT assets were handed over securely to the buyer. With the help of prosource.it, the buyer was quickly operational with no impact to production. 2 months post-transition, the buyer was able to exceed their production goals. The rigorous planning, collaboration, and deep technical knowledge the prosource.it team brought to the project, ensured the successful transition.
